Nirvana Day (Nehan-e)

Nirvana Day is a Buddhist memorial service held on February 15th to commemorate the death (Parinirvana) of the historical Buddha, Gautama Siddhartha. It is an important Buddhist event in which followers honor the Buddha's virtues and reaffirm his teachings.

The Buddha is said to have passed away on February 15th, 486 BCE, at the age of 80, in the suburbs of Kushinagar (present-day Uttar Pradesh, India). Nirvana Day has come to be observed in Buddhist countries such as Japan and China to mourn the Buddha's passing.

On Nirvana Day, it is common to display a "Nirvana Painting" (涅槃図, Nehan-zu) depicting the scene of the Buddha's death. The painting shows the Buddha lying down, surrounded by many disciples and animals grieving his passing. In some temples, a memorial service is held where the Buddha's last words and teachings are recited, and sweet tea (amacha) is offered to visitors.

Nirvana Day is not only a time to mourn the Buddha's death, but also an opportunity to reflect on his teachings and examine one's own way of life. The Buddha showed us the path to liberation from suffering. Through Nirvana Day, we can engrave his teachings in our hearts and strive for a better way of life.

涅槃会（ねはんえ）とは

仏教の開祖であるお釈迦様（ゴータマ・シッダールタ）が亡くなった日（入滅の日）である2月15日に行われる法要です。お釈迦様の遺徳を偲び、その教えを再確認する大切な仏教行事の一つです。

お釈迦様は、紀元前486年の2月15日、クシナガラ（現在のインド、ウッタル・プラデーシュ州）の郊外で、80歳で入滅されたとされています。涅槃会は、このお釈迦様の入滅の日を追悼するために、日本や中国などの仏教国で行われるようになりました。

涅槃会では、お釈迦様の入滅の様子を描いた「涅槃図」が掲げられるのが一般的です。涅槃図には、釈迦が横たわり、その周りを多くの弟子や動物たちが悲しんでいる様子が描かれています。また、お寺によっては、お釈迦様の遺言や教えが説かれる法要が行われたり、参拝者に甘茶が振る舞われたりします。

涅槃会は、お釈迦様の死を悲しむだけでなく、その教えを思い起こし、自分自身の生き方を見つめ直す機会でもあります。お釈迦様は、苦しみから解放されるための道筋を示してくださいました。涅槃会を通じて、私たちはその教えを心に刻み、より良い生き方を目指すことができるでしょう。
